Next Generation Leader Chapter One

You are Doing Too Much:

Chapter Thoughts:
-Knowing what you don't do well is just as valuable as what you do well.
-There is a great difference between working hard and working smart.
-A leader who spends large amounts of time being balanced in the leadership scales will rarely become a great leader.
-We need to strive as a team to become a balanced force and when we hire new team members we need to be aware of what weaknesses they will strengthen.
-What zapps you may energize someone else, so don't be afraid to ask them to pitch in.
-If Leadership is about getting things done through other people then we need to be empowering other people to make a difference and lead.
-It is the leader's fault if they find themselves believing the people around them are incompetent. They have lead their organization exactly to that point.

Questions:
1. What area(s) is your greatest strength?
---- mine is big picture thinking and teaching

2. What area(s) is your greatest weakness?
----mine is detail driven projects. I am zapped when I am dong administrative or day to day kind of work.

3. How can we better serve you in playing to your strengths?
---- for me you guys can take the manager need in me out of the picture by being pro-active in your areas. You can help me not have to focus time and energy in follow-up and administration.

Don't forget, Chapter 2 is due next week

1. Teaching. Leading. Smelling Good.
2. I am not good at doing things I don't think matter or things I don't have an interest in. In pertaining to my role with the church the first thing that comes to mind is follow up. I have been thinking about someone I could handle that off to and Daniel comes to mind... what do y'all think? I think it may be less intimidating for the recipient of the follow up if a congregant called. Also they would have us who hopefully know them as well as some one in the congregation Daniel.
3. Not really sure about that one. I think I am going to get an evaluation sheet from Rick to help critique and shape my preaching. Hopefully when I get the chance to speak Brandon can give this to a couple random people to help me steward that calling well. I guess maybe expectations help. What I am able to do...do I do that well. If not why? Those kind of questions I think are good...what could I do better with my strengths?

Chapter Underlines:
-I realized that my real value to our our organization lay within the context of my giftedness, not the number of hours I worked.
-The responsibilities I was reluctant to relunquish turned out to be opportunities for others.
-Only do what only you can do.
-Of the two or three things that define success for you, which of those are in line with your giftedness? Of the task you have been assigned to do, which of them are you specifically gifted to do?
-In general, an inability to own up to personal shortcomings is often rooted in some sort of insecurity.
-Leadership is not always about getting things done "right." Leadership is about getting things done through other people.
-Leadership is about multiplying your efforts, which automatically multiplies your results.
-When a leader cant find someone to hand things off to, it is time for him to look in the mirror.

I did laugh out loud when Andy said "If you want it done right, do it yourself" because it made me think of Chris. And myself. I do say that and feel that way at times - but delegation is important! Im learning!

Bags questions:
1. My greatest strenght is getting delevoping a team of people to make a difference in a child's life. Recruiting them, training them, and leading them. Another is creating curriculum and enviroments for kids and families.

3. My greatest weakness may be hesitation to confront issues. Sometimes I wait to say something or do something when I really need to NOW. Or being naive - but I would change that.

4. Yall could better serve me in playing to my stregths by encouragement. I love to write curriculum and encourage my team mates - but sometimes I get caught up in other things and need to be encourage back on track if you know what I mean.

OK - see yall soon!
